12 FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT YOUR FAT CELLS THAT WILL GET YOU LEAN
You have about 30 billion fat cells in your body. Even lean people with six-pack abs have billions of fat cells.
Your fat cells are more than just storage units. For years, researchers thought our fat cells did little more than act as reservoirs for fat. But new imaging techniques have provided us with a fascinating peek inside our fat cells, indicating that our fat cells work together as an active organ.
Your fat cells secrete more than 100 different hormones and chemicals. Your thyroid gland, for comparison’s sake, releases only four types of hormones. If you consider how a sluggish thyroid can contribute to weight gain, imagine what sluggish fat cells can do!
If you’re lean, your fat cells help keep you lean. In lean people, fat cells are typically small in size and secrete good-guy hormones and chemicals—like leptin and adiponectin—that help reduce hunger and increase insulin sensitivity. This helps keep you lean even as you eat.
Your fat cells can swell up to 50 times their normal size. The bigger your fat cells, the more harmful chemicals they secrete and the harder it is to lose weight.
If you’re carrying too much weight, your fat cells work to keep you fat. When you gain weight, your fat cells expand and don’t pump out as much of the beneficial hormones. Instead, they start attacking your system with hormones that thwart weight loss and help your fat cells grow even bigger.
Your body can create new fat cells. In between your fat cells are billions more immature cells. When your fat cells get so stretched out that they just can’t store any more fat, they shuttle unused carbs or fat to these nearby cells for storage, effectively transforming them into full-fledged fat cells. Now your fat cells are not only bigger, but there are also more of them! And they’re bombarding you with fat-promoting hormones.
Overstuffed fat cells are invaders. Your growing army of fat cells wants to invade every nook and cranny of your body, occupying the spaces in between your internal organs and even infiltrating your muscles. The intra-abdominal fat that envelops your organs is particularly dangerous and is linked to increased risk for heart disease, stroke and other serious diseases. And the fat in your muscles impacts your metabolism and makes it hard for Mr. Mito to do his job.
Your fat cells don’t die. Like those science fiction “supersoldiers” who can take a beating and still keep fighting, your fat cells are very hard to kill. And if your body creates new fat cells, you’re stuck with them.
Liposuction won’t solve your weight problem. Liposuction, a medical procedure that surgically removes fat from your body, doesn’t change the way your fat cells function. Your remaining fat cells will continue to spew out the harmful hormones that promote weight gain.
You can shrink the size of your fat cells. While you cannot eliminate your fat cells, you can reduce
